Objective

1. Collaborate with Battelle PNL in continued testing of installed fiber-optic system to determine area of coverage and optimum placement and configuration for lessening shadow edges (2007).
2. Consult with WSDOT and Battelle PNL on the installation and maintenance of two fiber-optic systems at one ferry terminal selected for experiments (2007-2008)
3. Develop in coordination with Battelle PNL experimental designs to test effect of fiber-optic lighting under ferry terminals upon migrating juvenile salmon passage (2007-2008)
4. With the assistance of Battelle PNL (who will document light environment during experiments), conduct in situ sampling of fish behavior under different experimental under-terminal lighting mitigation scenarios (2007-2009)
5. Prepare statistical and modeling analyses of juvenile salmon response behaviors to the different experimental under-terminal lighting mitigation scenarios (2008-2009)
6. In collaboration with Battelle PNL, prepare a summary analysis report, meeting/workshop presentation(s), and other publication(s) on the efficacy of alternative under-terminal lighting mitigation scenarios to improve juvenile salmon passage under ferry terminals (2009).

Project Progress

Tasks 1 to 3 are now completed. Fish behavior monitoring is still ongoing and will continue until the end of summer 2009. Statistical analysis of fish behavior has been conducted on 2008 data and will be expanded for 2009 data. A report on the fiber optic light measurement was prepared and published on January 2009 by Batelle PNL (PNWD-4027).

New Period Proposed Activity

Data collection will continue until the end of summer 2009 and statistical analysis will be conducted subsequently. Results will be presented at several meetings/conference during autumn-winter 2009.

Problems

The fiber optic lighting system that was the basis for the original tests in
2008 completely failed over the winter and Sunlight Direct, the company who
manufactured and maintained the system, closed due to the economic situation. In order to maintain the general objectives of our study, with WSDOT agreement we replaced the fiber optic system with a new lighting system (three 1500W halogen lighting system) in winter 2009. This more conventional lighting system allows us to increase light over that generated by the fiber optic-based system and thus test whether actual diminishment of shadows under the dock would result in juvenile salmon response.
