| Objective | ||
Detailed weather information along the state’s highways is required to maintain the roadways and to provide the public with a detailed description of current and future driving conditions. Such comprehensive weather information should describe both current and forecast conditions and be accessible and useful to a wide audience. To that end, the proposed effort would continue work at the University of Washington to maintain and improve a wide range of applications and innovative delivery approaches that provide a variety of atmospheric weather data resources, both observed and forecast, to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the traveling public. It will also support the continued provision of weather data to WSDOT for use on its traveler information web pages. |

| Project Progress | ||
During the Fall of 2008, substantial work was completed in a number of areas. The primary server for the public traveler weather information web pages was repaired and updated to reduce the number of outages experienced recently. The Ferry Weather web page was updated to reflect the new distribution of weather observing resources within the fleet. Several vessels' weather observations were recalibrated and corrected. The I-90 web page was updated to reflect changes in available data assets and camera locations. A number of data resources used in these web pages changed during this period, so the data processing system required maintenance to reflect the current status. The WSDOT pass reports underwent a change in data format, and this required rewriting of the associated data collection and decoding software. During the extended period of extreme weather this fall and early winter, ongoing maintenance of the web pages, data processing software, and computing resources was a high priority to ensure continuous availability, and monitoring activities will remain elevated through the important winter travel season. |
